In the winter of 1976, he immigrated to New York City from Jamaica in the West Indies to be with his parents. With the benefits of a special High School program in Jamaica, he was able to skip from 9th to 12th grade, and then won one of five Regents Scholarships given for college. In 1982, he graduated from SUNY-Albany cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. From there, he was recruited by the University of Maryland Dental School (the world’s first dental college), graduating in 1986.
Knowing that dental school could provide only limited experiences, Dr. Bonnick competed for and earned a position in advanced training at Long Island Jewish-Queens Hospital. Approximately 20% of dentists complete this type of residency.
After completing his residency program, the director asked Dr. Bonnick if he would like to stay for a second year as chief resident. The director said ‘It would put you among the top 2% of all general dentists educationally. You would help to train all the new residents, and handle the difficult cases, working alongside our specialists. Furthermore, I need someone who won’t compromise his moral and ethical standards.’
Dr. Bonnick chose to accept the chief residency, after which he was offered a part time job as an instructor in the program. He remained an instructor for 10 years, and was voted ‘Instructor of the Year’ in 1991.
Dr. Bonnick understands that they key to giving you the best dentistry possible is a lifelong commitment to learning and continuing education. By 1992, he had completed over 500 credits of continuing education (which is more than the minimum continuing education requirement for 30 years of dentistry). He was recognized with a Fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry, and is currently pursuing a Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. In this pursuit, he has taken courses in Practice Management, Cosmetic Dentistry, Laser Surgery, Conscious Sedation, Nutrition, Oral Cancer screening, and pathology.
Dr. Bonnick is grateful for the opportunities he has received in life, and is passionate about giving to the profession and the community. He has volunteered for missionary dentistry in the Domincan Republic and Jamaica, serving as group leader. In this service, he wrote the constitution for the Organization for International Development. He also serves on the Guilford County Advisory Committee and as an Instructor at the Guilford Technical College. He is a member of the North Carolina Dental Society, Dental Implant Associates of North Carolina, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress on Oral Implantology, and High Point Dental Society.
Dr. Bonnick has authored the novel "Jamaican Child", and is currently writing a new novel "Give Me Liberty". He and his wife, Kaye, have two wonderful children, Ernest and Benjamin.
